On my Wonder Magazine, I would like to use a woodland-like setting for one of my covers and a photo of a male with a dark black background. In my local area I have a few woodland areas with tree cover and open spaces, I also have a bush and tree area at the bottom of my garden. I will be using the research I have completed for this blog on lighting techniques used by professionals when taking these photos for the covers.
On my first magazine cover I have decided to take the photos for my front cover of my sister Rose in a woodland setting. I have chosen this setting as it will create an eye catching and hopefully green and bright background behind the actress on the cover, meaning the issue will stand out against the plain colours of other magazines. Also I would like to connect the woodland setting of the magazine cover to the plot of the adventure film the cover features, in which the characters spend a lot of their time discovering the woodland in the film. I am going to have her face quite close and personal with the reader, by using a close up, glancing across at the reader, direct address shot, which will show off the actress' dark brown and black shimmering eye makeup which matches with the brown of the mud associated with a woodland setting. I would like to dress Rose in a casual denim jacket with a black vest top and blue striped trousers, to imply this is the clothing worn by the character for some time due to her being lost in an unknown place without resources or clothing to change into. This will be an advert for a new adventure film in which Rose will be the actress playing one of the main characters, this will let the reader know that inside the magazine they will find an exclusive interview with the actress in the new film herself, allowing the reader to learn more about the actress and her experience creating the new film, which they cannot find anywhere else, encouraging my target audience to buy the magazine. Rose will be dressed in quite casual but stylish and trendy clothing with dark eye makeup which will stand out on the cover and appeal to my target audience of 16-25 year olds as it will interest the female side of the audience as they may be stereo-typically interested in fashion and different unusual styles of makeup and may admire the actress on the cover but may also interest male and female readers who are interested in the new adventure film to be released and finding out more about its actors and plot. I am going to hopefully use quite shadowy lighting on the cover in the woods to convey a dark and mysterious element to the film as the reader may not know much about the film plot and may be excited to find out more, it will also convey the idea that their may be potential danger towards the main characters in the film and the woods may not be as safe as they seem. I am not going to equip the actress with any props as not to give away anything in the film on weapons and tools she may use when discovering the woodland. I am only going to give Rose a wrist watch and a simple silver necklace, to make it seem these are her only real possessions as a result of her wearing it when left stranded in the woods, implying to the reader the character is aware of the time as she treks around the setting so it is not totally unsure of which part of the day it is as she works hard to survive. I will make sure her hair is in a messy and effortless style on the cover as to convey a natural look to her appearance. A reader would expect the character to have a messy and untidy appearance as she had lived in a woodland area for some time during the television series, it would then be unnatural for a makeup and hair team to give her tidy and sleek looking plaits and a trendy looking outfit. I will be applying brown bronzing powder onto the actor's face to imply she had been living a different life scavenging for food and survival throughout the series, this will be in the place of a tanned and slightly dirty complexion.
I will be taking inspiration from professionals at photography and film lighting. I discovered when reading up on photography lighting on the internet, experienced photographers recommend placing your light source close to your subject. This is because the farther the light source, the harder the light falling on your object or model, the closer the light source the more the light will illuminate the subject more evenly and naturally. Also experts recommend a beginner uses shadows for a 3D look to the photo, they can give a voluminous look to photos and makes the pictures look more real and as if the subject is standing in a space and not a flat surface. Also it is recommended to use a broad light source, this is because the broader the source, the softer the light coming off of it. You can bounce the light through a diffuser or reflector, e.g a soft-box or umbrella. Lighting techniques can be used by a photographer, such as loop lighting, in which a 'loop' is created under the subject's nose, Rembrandt lighting creates a triangle on the subject's cheek and also short lighting is cleverly used to make you subject's face look slimmer, in which the subject will direct the side of their face towards the camera. These lighting techniques will take practice as they may be difficult to achieve by a beginner.
On my second magazine cover I have decided to take photos for my front cover ready to use Adobe Fireworks to erase the surroundings and apply it to a dark black background. I have chosen this setting/background as it gives the magazine a sleek look and is a contrast to the first issue which has a bright woodland background. I will present my male actor on the cover as relatable at a similar age to my target audience. The actor on the cover will be playing a teenage character in a new detective comedy TV series to be released, solving crime in their home town, meeting and interviewing suspects undercover. This series would be attractive to a reader as it may be exciting due to the strangeness and unexpected nature of a teenager or young adult, like themselves, to work as busy life as a detective (with no one feeling suspicion towards him) and they may be interested to find out more about his life and find out what his job entails. As it may be unimaginable to be in his important and potentially dangerous position at such a young age for the reader. I will dress the celebrity in the clothing of their character, which not only implies the idea that they are a teenager but to give the reader yet more behind the scenes of the series and an idea of the mysteriousness to the character. He will be dressed in an all black outfit of a black or dark blue t-shirt, black baggy jeans and black shoes, to convey to the reader the mysteriousness of the character he portrays in the series and also a slight untidiness to his outfit to stereotypically imply his young age. The colour black connotes mystery and the unknown, representing the idea that his job role is unknown to the reader at this point if they have not watched or read about the new TeenDetective series yet. The actor will use direct address to catch the eye of the target audience, but I will make sure the character is staring into the eyes of the reader. The actor's all black clothing will give them a slightly uneasy sense to them meaning the reader will want to buy the magazine to find out more about her character in the new series. The lighting on the cover will be edited so it is quite bright as I am aiming to take the photo on a sunny day in which there are blue skies, this aims to make the cover photo eye-catching as his face is lit up creating the visibility of the bright colours of their eyes and hair.
On my first magazine contents I will be capturing a photograph of a female model using direct address against a plain white wall, this will hopefully create a shadow as the sun reflects on the background across the model's neck and nose area. The model will not be dressed as the actress she plays in the television series but in her own trendy clothing. I have decided she will be dressed in a plain white t-shirt to match with the background as not to take away from the effective dark purple eye-makeup she will be wearing in the photo and will be wearing a sliver necklace. Her dark hair will hopefully also catch the light meaning blonde and ginger tints will be evident in the photo. This outfit will be effective as it is relatable to the 16-25 year old demographic as the outfit in which their possible favourite actress is wearing, even though they can only see above her waist, is easily recreatable. Often a model on a magazine is wearing very specific, designer clothing which is virtually impossible to get hold of due to price and availability in stores, with this outfit the reader can easily style a plain outfit like her. I will not be using any props in the photo at all. The photo will be a close up shot so the makeup worn by the model, in which allows it to be appeal to a female reader who may have an interest in the makeup worn day to day by the actress, is visible and it feels 'up close and personal' with the reader. This implies that the article on the actress may reveal secrets of the tv show and her personality/career, a reader may not find this gossip anywhere else.
On my second magazine contents I will be capturing a photograph of a male model as to cover a wider range of ages of actors in film and television. I will be adding this photo to the left hand side of the page on a dark grey, black or green background, depending on which I believe looks the best in the editing room or I will be keeping the background of the side street wall in Covent Garden in which I am planning to capture the photo. The model will be wearing a smart casual outfit of a black body warmer as to imply the cold weather of the October months in which the magazine will be released and also hopefully a patterned red or blue shirt. This will be to add a more 'dress down' style to the magazine, it will not feel too formal towards the younger audience. Although the model is not of the relatable age to the target audience (16-25 year olds), it is important he seems an expert in his field in which he is presented to represent on the contents. He will be a celebrity whom has a lot of knowledge on how music and film influences style and fashion, discovering London's streets. The model will be playing a celebrity and similarly to the other contents page, the model will not be captured on set of a tv series or film. The setting will seem classy in the background as a brick wall of an elegant London street as to gain admiration as a famous celebrity whom can afford to travel around the city. His outfit as an expert will be easily recreatable by the male audience of the demographic if they are inspired by his casual look.
