The target audience I would like to hit is the demographic of Entertainment Magazines, which is often 16 to 25 year olds, whom enjoy reading about upcoming films and discovering new music of lots of different genres.
This audience's pyschographic: My target audience should enjoy finding out more about upcoming films in the cinema and reading interviews on popular celebrities, artists and film stars. This audience may not enjoy documentaries or informational films or television programmes as a younger generation but this is a very stereotypical opinion on this demographic. They may prefer pop, indie, dance or rock music over jazz or classical music. They may be interested in reading short, but interesting interviews with film stars in which are popular at the time of the issue release due to an upcoming film they star a key role in. They may prefer watching film adaptations of stories over reading the original book edition, due to a films special effects and powerful visuals. It is important for the Entertainment magazines to cater for my demographic, the issues must be eye-catching and have lots of information in the contents and on the cover on what the reader will find inside the magazine. It is vital to catch the attention of the reader straight away as they find something presented on the cover they find interesting, meaning they are more likely to purchase the magazine and repurchase it due to enjoying the read. As a result of stereotypes of this demographic I will make sure I include these preferences in the magazine I create as to hopefully interest my target audience of young people.
A stereotypical profile of an older member of my target audience (20-25 year olds):
Gender- Female
Age- 24 years old
Likes- Watching comedy and sitcom tv programmes, listening to audio books, reading autobiographies of celebrities and film stars/watching interviews.
Dislikes- Reading newspapers, watching documentaries and listening to the radio.
A stereotypical profile of a younger member of my target audience (16-20 year olds):
Gender- Male
Age- 18 years old
Likes- Watching action films, going to the cinema, listening to indie and pop music and going to concerts.
Dislikes- Reading about beauty and fashion in magazines, Period Drama tv programmes.
As a result of creating a survey on the website www.surveymonkey.com I have analysed 16-25 year old's opinions and likes and dislikes of Entertainment Magazines, specifically sixth form students between the ages 16 and 19 years old.
I have had 17 responses to my survey and have discovered:
- What would you like to read about the most in an Entertainment Magazine?
6 people would like to read interviews with filmstars and celebrities the most, meaning I will make sure I will include interviews in my EM.
5 people would like to read exclusive information about upcoming films in the cinema the most
5 people would like to see never seen before photographs from new films the most
4 people would like to read articles written about singers and bands the most
- Which Entertainment Magazines are you most likely to read or buy?
The most popular Entertainment Magazine out of the list I created (Empire, Entertainment Weekly, Total Film, Film Weekly and OK! Magazine) was OK! Magazine with 5 votes, meaning people enjoy to read about celebrity gossip in magazines.
- Do you usually look at EM when choosing a magazine to read?
A majority of the people (8) said no to this question, meaning Entertainment magazines can be quite a niche genre of magazine and may not be very popular within 16-19 year olds and may appeal to those from the age of 20 in the target audience and older.
- How much would you be willing to pay for an EM?
A majority of the people (9) would spend £2.50-£3.50 on a magazine. This means I am likely to price my EM between these numbers and no more expensive. But two people also added in the 'other section' they would not be willing to spend money on an Entertainment Magazine 'none' and one person said they would only spend £1.99.
- What type of films/tv series would you like to read about in an EM?
5 people said Action and Adventure
5 people said Comedy and Sitcoms
1 person said Drama
There were no votes for Crime and Detective
2 people said Historical and Period Drama
But in the other station two people said documentaries, one said they wouldn't read any articles about TV series or films 'none' and one person said they would read 'all of the above.' This gives me an idea of which genres of film and TV series to focus my EM on, Action and Adventure and Comedy and Sitcoms.
-What would be reason you would not read or buy an EM?
The responses were -
- 'Because you can get the same information for free on your phone'
- 'boring'
- 'I only buy them when I'm interested in the band/movie features in it'
- 'Not my type of thing to read'
- 'I don't read magazines very much'
- 'Too trashy/could be cash information and I would also get the info online'
This gives me an idea of why Entertainment Magazines may not be so popular within a younger audience and may be a niche genre, this information will allow me to create my magazine and its website along these lines. I will be creating one cover on action and adventure films and one on a comedy and sitcom basis. I will price my magazine between the prices £2.50 and £3.50. I will also be including celebrity gossip on the sell lines, contents page and on one the articles in one of my magazines. I will make sure to include exclusive information about the films mentioned on my magazine covers in the articles and lots of exclusive photos in my magazine and on the magazine website.
